Organic and Natural Ideas For Your Baby Nursery
Source: isnare.com
After the initial excitement of finding out your are expecting, you find yourself faced with a myriad of decisions. Today, it is easier than ever to choose to parent your child in a natural and organic way to help ensure she is surrounded by healthy materials and products. Choosing to go organic will help your baby be less prone to allergies and infections and other unhealthy conditions.
Nearly everything in your baby’s nursery can be found in a natural form, including the bedding, her clothing, and the décor. Natural baby items are becoming more and more prevalent in the marketplace and many companies are offering products which fall into the natural or organic category. The decision to go natural can be rewarding for both you and your baby.
The environment in your baby’s nursery is also important. Your baby is surrounded by paint and carpet and of course air. Make sure the paint is a lead-free paint, and if you are applying a new paint to coordinate with the nursery patterns, you can go with an eco-friend brand of paint, such as Ecos Organic Paints or FreshAire Choice. These paints have less paint odor to the and are free of the harsh chemicals that remain in your home and in the air. This will help your baby avoid inhaling any fumes and breathe more easily. Additionally, an ionizer can also help keep the air fresh and clean as well.
When you are ready to select baby furniture, look for woods that are organic in nature and come from sustainable material. Part of being a natural parent is being aware of where materials are derived as well as choosing healthy products. If manufactured outside the country, try to make sure the furniture is a fair-trade item where the workers are treated and paid fairly for their efforts. In this way you are looking out for your baby’s future as well as people’s lives today.
Of course the bedding you choose for the crib can be made from organic items. Organic cotton is becoming readily available for purchase, and organic bamboo is also starting to make its presence in the bedding world. In addition to being a sustainable source, bamboo is extremely soft as well as a natural repellant for dust mites and bacteria. Organic fibers like cotton and bamboo can be found in a variety of colors and designs to complement any nursery theme.
Your baby will need some care products. You can have natural canvas shelves with natural baby products on them from manufacturers such as Aveeno, Burt's Bees Baby Bee, and California Baby which are safer for baby’s skin and less likely to cause irritation.
If you are choosing to use natural and organic products, it is a good idea to let your family and friends know of your decision. This way if they are purchasing gifts for you and your baby, they can find items which will meet your philosophy. And with the combined efforts of you and your family and friends, you will have a beautiful nursery natural in every way, from the products you use for your baby to the furniture in which she sleeps.

Used Baby Items: Are They Safe?
Source: articledashboard.com
You new little bundle of joy is certainly a treasure. And, as you may have noticed, it sometimes takes a fortune to outfit, feed and accessorize your little treasure. How can you give your baby everything she needs, yet save a few bucks in the process? If used baby items are your answer, whether purchased or given to you, you are certainly correct. Used baby items will save you money. But, are used baby items safe for your baby?
Safe Used Baby Items - Clothing
It's no secret that babies grow out of clothing very rapidly. This is where buying used can be a big help. With the number of quality used baby clothing shops, thrift stores and used baby clothing sold on eBay, you can outfit your baby for a fraction what new clothing would cost. In fact, just recently four outfits for baby girls, size 3 months, were sold on eBay for $.15 (that's fifteen cents!) with a shipping cost of $5. Four outfits for just $5.15! That's quite a bargain. And, with proper laundering, quite safe.
Potentially Unsafe Items
But, what about used baby items that might not be safe to purchase? Which items for your baby should you scrutinize or avoid altogether?
Used Cribs
Be very careful when buying or accepting a used crib as you don't know the risks involved. If the crib is nearly new and properly assembled you should be ok. But, for older cribs you might want to take a pass. And, here's why:
1. The crib may not meet current safety standards. For example, crib slats can be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart to prevent the baby's body from getting stuck. Also, the mattress must fit tightly so that the baby cannot get trapped between the mattress and the
side of the crib.
2. An older crib may have lead paint in the finish.
3. If you are missing parts or instructions, you could assemble the crib incorrectly, making it a dangerous place for your baby to sleep. Bottom line, this is your baby we're talking about. He deserves a crib that is safe.
Other Used Baby Furniture
You need to make sure that any used baby furniture contains lead-free paint.
Used Car Seat
Again, if the car seat is nearly new, you may be okay. However, if the instructions or the DOT safety label are missing, don't buy or accept the car seat.
Used Baby Toys
If you're tempted to give your baby your old toys, don't. They may make great collectibles, but they may not be safe for your baby. Yes, yes, it's true that you played with them and you made it through childhood, but there are new safety standards for baby toys now. Your old toys can be painted with lead-based paint or contain chips or cracks. Why risk the safety of your baby?
What about newer used baby toys? If you are considering used baby toys do inspect them carefully and choose those in excellent condition, rejecting those which have chipped paint, loose or missing parts, are cracked or chipped or have frayed threads. For those that pass inspection, make sure you clean and disinfect them thoroughly before allowing your baby to play with them.

Baby Cribs are More Than Just Furniture!
Source: articleage.com
Purchasing a crib is a critical decision for new parents. A baby crib is the focal point of the nursery, but more importantly it must be a safe place for the baby to rest while mom and dad are not in the room. Think about it! Your infant will spend most of her time away from caregivers in the crib. So selecting the safest crib for your newborn is of utmost importance; it will become the centerpiece of a warm, inviting nursery as well as the safest place when not in mommy's arms.
The first choice you'll need to make is which style baby crib you would like for the d้cor of your baby's nursery. There are a variety of styles of cribs available nowadays. The first and most common is the standard crib. When selecting the standard baby crib you need to be mindful of the two types of models.
Standard baby cribs either have a single drop side or a double drop side where both sides drop down. It depends on your needs and where you would like to position the baby crib in your nursery.
The standard baby crib will provide the classic baby nursery look; however it will not provide the longevity on the next option, the convertible baby crib.
Convertible cribs convert to a toddler bed from standard crib. These cribs even have the possibility to change from a toddler bed into a day or full sized bed. This long lasting feature offered by convertible cribs makes them a very attractive choice for new parents. Although they are a more costly item when new baby expenses are all ready piling up the convertible baby crib can ideally save you money in the long run.
Next in line would be canopy cribs have four posts on the corners of the bed. These posts hold up a usually metal frame on which you can place fabric canopies. Parents who buy canopy cribs want a more elegant & sophisticated design for their nursery. Round cribs are gaining popularity. Round cribs come with a canopy frame and they add a touch of class to your baby's nursery. Round Cribs usually have large double wheel casters which make the round crib easy to move when you need to move to another area.
Let's say you have guests and you want to have them sleep in peace and quiet, you can roll the baby in his/her round crib in your bedroom. Round Crib locks into place when you have found the perfect spot for it. Round baby cribs give the look and feel of a canopy yet round baby cribs add mobility for the parents.
For the traveling parents, a portable crib is an option. Portable Cribs give parents the flexibility of taking their child anywhere to get a good night sleep. The portable crib goes anywhere and everywhere you go. Bring the comforts of home when you travel - whether on vacation or just visiting Grandpa. The portable crib folds compactly to easily carry with you. Some portable cribs, convert into a comfortable crib mattress when your child outgrows the bassinet. Parents who travel often may consider the standard baby crib for home and opt for a portable crib when out and about.
Once you have decided the type of baby crib you'd like begin to shop around. For starters, research the names of reputable furniture stores and crib manufacturer.
Your shopping experience for baby cribs is one that is propelled by finding the best for baby. This isn't a time to bargain hunt. Locate a store or showroom browse around and inspect the construction of the available cribs. Any crib worth considering should be made with a sturdy construction. The frame of the baby crib must be solid and secure. If possible check to see if the crib is stable in all positions as most baby cribs on the market today convert and adjust to grow along with the child. Inquire about when and where the baby crib was manufactured. If interested, learn the type of wood from which the baby crib is constructed. Be sure to verify that the baby crib comes complete with instruction and warranty.
When your choice is finalized and the crib arrives in your home there are a variety of safety matters that need to be put in place. The first begins with assembly. Be sure to follow all instructions. Test again to ensure that the crib is sturdy and secure as it was in the furniture store where you purchased it. If you opted for a crib with movable parts be sure all sides or rails lock into place. Nothing could be worse than the thought of the baby injuring himself while holding onto ill-assembled crib rails. When placing the mattress inside the frame of the baby crib make sure they are right against all of the sides of the crib sets. You would not want your child's foot to get lodged between the crib and mattress. Over time any mattress that appears worn or ill-fitted to the crib frame should be replaced immediately.
Before long, the time will come when you can adorn your crib with the bedding. Some safety rules will apply here as well. You should always take off any jewelry, pillows or stuffed animals from the baby when you place them into the baby cribs. This will keep the baby safe from any choking or suffocation hazard. Do not place the crib sets close to windows, lamps, electrical plugs or curtains. Soft pillows, mattresses, comforters, stuffed toys and bumper pads are not be used in cribs sets. When babies play with toys in the crib they should be supervised. As your child grows it is important to reassess the safety of the baby crib.
For example, when the baby can sit up, make sure you move the mattress down to the lowest point. As your bundle of joy starts teething you may need to affix a plastic guard to the bed rail as many growing youngster develop the habit of gnawing on the crib frame. Some baby cribs are designed with non-toxic finishes. Selecting and using a baby crib for your infant is challenging task, but one that will provide safety and design to your baby's nursery.

Three Tips On Starting Your Antique Collection
Source: articleage.com
Tip 1: Understanding antiques
In strict antique-speak, an antique is any collectable item that is seventy to one-hundred years old. Newer items can also be quite valuable; if you know how to pick them. In all instances, a collectible item has value if someone, somewhere, wants to buy it. Just remember: "One man's trash is another man's treasure".
You may already know what you want to start collecting, but finding your antique niche means doing the relevant research first. For every item--furniture, clothing, books, or other odd collectibles--there is a general code of understanding as to their value in dollars. In order to be a successful antique collector you need to learn about the era in which you item was made, and what this means about its value.
Tip 2: Understanding the antique market
Whether you are interested in building a collection of Victorian furniture or vintage baby clothing one of the best places to start is the Internet. Use the search engine of your choice to begin researching your antique niche from the comfort of your own home.
Or you may like to log onto eBay: eBay offers a great atmosphere to get a feel for what is valuable, what isn't and how much things are selling for. In eBay search for something like "antique" and "silver" or "leather" and see what the search brings up. Watch a few of these items for a few days. Note the price, item details, or use the eBay interface to ask questions about the piece you are watching: age, condition, previous owner, etc.
Once you get an idea of what is on offer, how people buy and how much people are willing to pay for an item, you may like to head off to markets, antique stores and shows where you can engage other enthusiasts or shop owners into discussion.
Tip 3: Determining what to collect
Choosing your antique niche is more about what interests you; it also depends on how deep your pockets are. Try to budget a certain amount of your income per month to see how much you can spend. Also, ask yourself how quickly you want to start building your antique collection. If you have lots to spend you may choose to locate items in mint condition. If you have less to spend you may go after items in less than mint condition. It's always best to research before you buy. In all cases, try to learn as much as you can about the certain type of collectible or antique: where it comes from, the style or era, and even, the maker or artist or designer. Be it silverware or clothing or furniture or paintings, the more you know about the items you choose to collect the better you'll be able to judge its value. Otherwise you'll just have to take other people's word for it.

Your Bed: Does It Invite You?
Source: isnare.com
The bed that you have in your bedroom should be something that you look forward to. Although most have one, very few realize what can be done to your bed as well as to the room itself to make this a very relaxing and enjoyable location for you and for your loved ones. If you go to bed stressed and wake up exhausted, changing a few things bout your bed is what you need to do in order to improve your health and well being. What's more is that it is easy to do this!
To get started, take a look at the things that you have in your bedroom. If it is cluttered, unorganized and generally unclean, you can't possibly get a good nights rest from your room. Start by cleaning out as much as possible from the room, in the hopes of creating a peaceful area to sleep. Make sure that there is nothing on the floor of your bedroom that doesn't belong there. You should also take into consideration furniture. A bedroom that is overcrowded is also not enjoyable and it can't give you the relaxation that you need to enjoy sleeping there.
Get It Out
One of the most important things that you need to pay attention to is the television. Yes, many people have one in their rooms, somehow propped up so that they can watch their favorite rerun, movie or realty television show well into the night. The problem with this is simple. The television causes your mind to be stimulated. It doesn't help you to go to sleep, but stimulates your mind to think and consider various things. No matter what you think, try removing the television for just one night and see if you can fall asleep better, faster and even sleep better. By the way, the exercise equipment doesn't belong either!
The Bed
Now, take a look at your bed. Does it look inviting? If you have dressed your bed correctly, it will. To start, place clean, matching sheets on your bed. Actually make your bed. Although many people don't take into consideration the need to do this any longer, it can be an ideal way to make your bed more comfortable and inviting. You want to see a nice, neat fitting sheet and quilt. If you walk into a hotel room and sit on the bed, you enjoy the look and feel of a well dressed bed. Yours can be the exact same way!
To add even more character and enjoyment to your bed, take the time to fluff the pillows. Throw on to your bed a few decorative pillows. Try different materials for sheets including silks and satins. In fact, one of the most important things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep is to improve your mattress quality! If your bed is not comfortable and the room around it isn't going to provide you with relaxation, you shouldn't be sleeping in it. Make your room your sanctuary.

Poisonings In Children - Which Household Products Are Hazardous?
Source: isnare.com
As parents, we do our best to keep our children healthy and safe. We buckle up their seatbelts, tell them to wash their hands before dinner, and to eat their fruits and vegetables. Yet, childhood poisonings occur every day across the globe. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, one hundred children ages fourteen and under died in 2002 because of accidental poisonings. Fifty-seven percent of these deaths occurred in children ages four and under. Safe Kids Worldwide also reports that in 2003, 89,330 children ages fourteen and under had to visit a hospital emergency room for accidental poisonings. Eighty percent were children ages four and under.
If you think that an accidental poisoning could not happen to your child, think again. I turned my back on my 18-month-old daughter to throw away her diaper. When I turned around, she had zinc oxide cream in her mouth. She had been out of my sight for less than fifteen seconds! Fortunately, the Poison Control Center said that this cream was not toxic to her.
When my children were babies, I was well aware of the dangers posed by ingesting household cleaners. I had spent four weeks working on a burn unit when I was a university student. I had vivid memories of meeting a child with a chemical burn to the esophagus (the tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach). This burn had been caused by ingesting dishwasher detergent.
Fortunately, many parents do lock up their household cleaners. However, I have learned that we need to keep more than just cleaners away from our children. Here is a list of some of the everyday products that can be severely harmful or poisonous:
- all cosmetics and skin care products
- toothpaste and mouthwash
- antiperspirant and deodorant
- shampoo and conditioner, hairspray, and other styling aids
- soap and body wash
- sunscreen
- perfume and cologne
- bubble bath
- hand and body lotion
- baby oil
- air freshener and deodorizer
- medications
- disinfectants
- laundry detergents, stain removers, fabric softeners, chlorine bleach, spray starch
- dishwashing soap and dishwasher detergent
- multi-purpose cleaner
- toilet bowl cleaner
- furniture polish
- batteries
- toxic plants
- mothballs
In summary, we do everything we can to keep our children safe. However, many products in our homes can poison them. By being aware of products that can cause harm to our children, we can take action to prevent childhood tragedies.

How To Spot Quality Furniture
Source: isnare.com
Iwas watching a TV show the other day called the Antiques Road Show I was somewhat startled to see how much some of the old hand made home furnishings like chairs, dressers, coat racks and the like were worth. What did all of these items have in common? Well to start with they were all hand crafted with solid wood! I say this because today I do not believe much of anything is hand crafted this by itself though is not really a problem if it was not for mass production most of us would not be able to afford furniture. The true measure of fine furniture is the materials that it is constructed out of whether you are purchasing a complete bedroom set or a coat rack if is made from sub par materials such as particle board or MDF (medium density fiberboard) it will not last as long as solid wood construction.
Now if you are buying furniture at your local X-Mart type store you are only going to get cheaply made imported furniture these type of stores have their place you certainly do not want to spend thousands of dollars on a top of line baby crib that will only be used for a short time but if you are looking for a family heirloom to pass don or just enjoy the feel and look that only comes from finely crafted furniture you will have to shop someplace else.
Actually one of the best places to look for high quality home furnishings is on the Internet there are many craftsman around the world who specialize in one off high quality design and creating of great pieces. You still need to be careful before spending thousands of dollars with one of these craftsman look at their return policy, ask for a list of prior customers so you can check with them, you may even want to visit their shop and check it out for yourself.
I recently went to a local furniture store to look at dining room tables I was going to buy the chairs and build my own table but after looking at the new tables I was actually impressed with the quality of the construction it was as advertised solid Oak. I was surprised to discover that it would cost me more for the raw materials than the complete table cost. I did however opt for the unfinished table and finished it myself to save a little pride. When you have the choice opts for solid wood construction it will last many times longer then the cheap imitation wood substitutes that have flooded the market. Whether it is a coat rack or a complete dining room set look for quality construction to last many lifetimes.

Cotbeds Buying Guide
Source: ezinearticles.com
Cotbeds provide a logical, practical and extremely popular way of lengthening the life of a cot as well as helping to make the transition to a toddler bed as smooth as possible. When researching cotbeds you will find that there is a huge amount of choice and a multitude of function and style options. You need to consider the safety and comfort of your child, your ease of access, space and looks.
Initially your baby is going to be spending the majority of his day in his cotbed, sometimes up to 20 hours and so it is an important decision to make. This item of furniture is also going to be on display in your home for 5-6 years so you will want to ensure that you choose a cotbed in a style and colour that 'fits' with your home decor.
This buying guide will help you to determine the safety features and options of cotbeds that are going to be most important to you.
Adjustable Base Positions
Cotbeds should have 2 or 3 different settings for the mattress height.
You will start with the highest setting as this provides the easiest access to your baby. Once your baby starts to push up onto their hands and knees unaided you will need to move the base down for additional safety.
The sides of the cotbed should be at least 500mm higher than the mattress when it is in its lowest position.
Fixed Sides or Dropsides
Fixed sides simply means that access to your baby will only be possible by leaning over and into the cotbed.
For most people this will not cause any problems but for others this may be impractical or undesirable. If you are petite or have an existing back condition then we would recommend you consider a dropside.
If you opt for a dropside then we recommend you choose one with both a simple mechanism and one handed operation. The latches should be unreachable by children to make them safe.
Choice of Mattress
There are essentially three options - foam, fibre or sprung.
Ventilation is vital as there must be a constant flow of air around the baby's head. This means that you will require a ventilation system in the head and mid section of the mattress for when your baby is placed in the 'feet to foot' position.
It is vitally important that the mattress fits snugly into the frame. When the mattress is gently pushed to one side there should be no more than a 4cm gap to the rails.
Useful features to look for are a wipe clean surface, removable and reversible covers.
Teething Rails
During teething a baby is likely going to want to chomp on the edges of their cot. Teething rails are a protective covering on the cot edges to provide extra protection for a baby's delicate teeth and also for prevention of damage to the cot.
Spacing of Slats
This is an extremely important safety aspect to ensure that your baby's head cannot get stuck between the railings.
The recommendation in the UK is that the spaces between the slats must be 45-65mm, and less than 60mm wide in the mattress base.
Baby Safe Paint or Varnish
Any paints and finishes used must have a non lead base and be non toxic.
Bedding
Please note that you will need to buy cotbed bedding and not bedding designed for cots else it will not fit.
The bedding that you choose should not include any trailing ribbons or strings of material as a safety precaution.
Build and Design
The cotbed that you choose should be sturdyIf there are corner posts they should be no higher than 1.5mmThere should be no sharp edges, exposed hardware or splintered woodScrews and bolts should all be present and tightly secured

Designer Crib Bedding For Your Baby
Source: articledashboard.com
Having a baby is one of the most natural and exciting things to happen to a family. Many people feel that their family is not complete without children of their own and the nine months from conception to birth is filled with enthusiasm and preparation.
One of the most exciting parts of the process for parents-to-be is the creation of a nursery for the newcomer. Babies obviously require a large amount of specific equipment, such as changing mats, clothes, toys and a crib. Preparing the nursery so that everything they need is available when they come home makes the impending arrival more real for the household. Choosing the color, style and overall look of the room depends largely on the personalities of the parents but many opt for designer items to ensure that they are of high standards and do the job they were made to do well, whilst looking aesthetically pleasing.
One area which can really alter the overall look of the room is the crib itself and the bedding within. For the first few years, the crib will be the dominating piece of furniture in the room and every visitor to the home will at some point peer in at the newborn as they sleep in their crib. The baby will spend a large proportion of its time sleeping for the first weeks and months so it makes sense to ensure that this is one area which the parents are particularly happy with.
Celebrities are renowned for using the best products and manufacturers for their babies. This endorsement, whether paid or not, brings certain products to the forefront of the public's mind and many parents feel that if it is good enough for a film star, it is good enough for them and their baby. Finding the products to buy can be a different matter though, particularly if you do not live in or near to a large city. However, the Internet has made it much easier to find whatever product you are looking for and to have it shipped directly to your home.
One website I have found which specialises in designer baby-wear, furniture and bedding is found at www.babyscribsupply.com This site allows you to shop by designer if you wish so that you can easily locate a specific product if you know who made it. Alternatively, you can browse the site by product. Everything you will need for your baby and nursery is available to buy in one place and every product has a photograph to allow you to see it before you buy it.
The crib bedding section has every color and pattern imaginable for your baby. You can view the products by gender of the baby or you all at a time. As I mentioned earlier, this is possibly one of the most important purchases you will make for your child's nursery as it will be seen and used with such regularity. Once you have selected the bedding you require you can then shop by the designer if you wish to decorate the whole room with the same label, or you can choose additional products which will complement the look you have chosen.

The Ultimate Guide To Finding Treasures At Garage Sales

First, prioritize the sales by time and potential for good items. An ad that includes antiques or collectibles in the wording would have more potential than one that has baby toys and clothes.
Moving sales are sometimes the best sales since the seller is more motivated to get rid of their items or they may be desperate to get rid of some things that they can't take with them.
Get there early! The early bird gets the worm. Many dealers and buyers get to the best sales very early, sometimes an hour before the sale is supposed to start. They do this not only to be the first ones in to buy, but to also potentially look at or even make a deal before the sale even starts. They are also hoping that, by getting there early, the sale will be already set up and ready for buyers to look at, then they can say oops, I got here early and then the seller will let them in early. This is one way the serious dealers get the best deals. They get there before everyone else. This is also how dealers get great prices, since so often, the seller has no idea what something is worth. The dealer who gets there first can offer a tiny fraction of an item's worth, make it sound good and then traipse off with it without anyone else ever knowing it was available. The seller probably even thinks they got a good price.
To many people who have had multiple garage sales, the early bird dealers are known as "vultures". It's a good name for them too, since they are experts at not only taking advantage of the timing, but also their own expertise and the sellers lack of expertise. When you get to a sale a few minutes early and you see other, serious looking people there, standing around and waiting, there's a good chance they are vultures and you have stumbled upon a potentially great sale. Many sellers find vultures annoying or opportunistic, so I don't recommend using this strategy. If you do decide to try being a vulture, make sure to respect the sellers wishes. If a garage sale ad says, no early birds, they mean it. Respect their wishes. Just being nice is underrated, you're more likely to get a great deal by being nice and friendly than being underhanded or aggressive.
Don't underestimate what you can get when getting there later in the day. When the sale is about to close or even when the seller is cleaning up and putting things away, you may just find something other people have missed and get a great deal. Plus, late in the day, sellers may be even more willing to negotiate.
Timing is important, don't forget to schedule and prioritize the sales you plan to attend. They often start at different times, so you can hit one that starts at 8, right when it starts. Then you can hit another right afterwards that starts at 8:30.
One of the most important tips is to have cash with you. Most sellers, unless they know you already, will absolutely not accept checks at a garage sale. Make sure to have enough cash on you, so you can buy what you want or make an offer right then and there. Also, don't show your money. If you have a ten dollar bill in your hand and you offer the seller $3 for something, this makes it less likely they will take a lower offer. Of course, don't forget to haggle, this is the point of garage sales!
High tail it out of any sales where the seller is "firm" on all their items or is asking close to retail prices. Also, try to weed out the sales by the same people that have never ending, or perennial garage sales. Every area has them.
Be ethical. If you can see the seller is in dire straits and needs money or if they are raising money for someone's surgery or a charity of some kind, don't be too aggressive in your haggling. You can get a great deal, while still being ethical.
One way to narrow down your search for treasures is to skip the time wasters, items that are not likely worth much, and zone in on the stuff that might be worth something. Some time wasters include books, newer toys, baby stuff, CD's, DVD's, posters, Beanie Babies, Furby's, magazines, electronics, computer stuff, etc.
Things to check out first include, basically anything from the 70's or before may have some worth or potential future worth. Also, any antique or vintage clothing, jewelry, toys, household items, furniture, kitchen items, tools, glass, porcelain, pottery, textiles, clocks, silver and paintings. Head for anything that looks old or vintage and check it out.
Some of the many potentially great finds include signed art pieces or sculptures or unsigned art that is of exceptional quality, signed vintage and costume jewelry or unsigned jewelry that is of exceptional quality and good condition, first edition and signed books by known authors, vintage toys of all kinds in good condition, vintage kitchen items including canisters, gadgets, older small appliances, vintage clothing in good condition, antique furniture in original condition with a natural patina, antique tools of all kinds, vintage or antique porcelain and pottery with marks, vintage or antique glass items by known makers, antique or vintage silver items, old embroidered textiles and antique clocks.
Once you have your trunk full of potential treasures, it's time to go home and research your items. The Internet is a perfect resource for this. From finding websites or auctions selling similar items to getting book recommendations for offline researching, the Internet is a treasure trove in itself. Be sure to take advantage of it! Good luck!

Custom Knife Care (Blades&Handles)
Source: articleage.com
Custom Knife Care (Blades and Handles)
By Rhonda Erline
I own and sell custom made knives by Marvin Poole and I've
learned good knife care is important to keep them looking and
performing at their best.
Whether you are a collector who likes to admire your knives for
their sheer design and beauty or a person who uses the knife,
taking proper care of your knife will ensure it will last many
years to come.
Knife Use
Your knife was designed for a specific task and purpose. Do not
use the knife blade for something it was not designed for, by
doing so, you could damage the tip of blade which is the weakest
part and possibly damage the knife edge, beyond repair. Most
knife warranties will not cover knife repair due to misuse and
abuse.
Knife Care
Regardless of what metal the blade is made from it will rust if
not properly cleaned. Stainless steel blades are more rust and
stain resistant than other metals and need less care, but are
not completely rustproof. The fastest way to corrode a high
quality 440-C stainless steel blade is by leaving it exposed to
sea water for a long period of time 24-48 hours or longer.
To prevent rust from forming on the blade take time to clean
your knife after every use with mild non abrasive soap in
lukewarm water. The knife should then be thoroughly rinsed and
dried from handle toward blade edge. If you still see stains on
the blade, you can spray a small amount of Windex on a clean
soft cloth and wipe the blade making sure to completely wipe or
rinse it off. Marvin Poole uses Windex on his knives and finds
that the ammonia in the Windex is an excellent cleaner, as well
as acts as a disinfectant. A good metal polish such as
Simichrome or Flitz will also easily remove stains.
Handles
The handle is an important part of knife and needs to be taken
care of as well.
With years of use, Stag will dry out and crack.
Ram horn has a tendency to dry out and crack in extreme
heat. Do not leave it in a hot vehicle. It is best stored at
room temperature.
Ivory cannot take extreme temperature changes. If you
have the knife stored in room temperature then take it out to
use it in extreme cold or hot weather it will dry and crack.
The only care needed for bone handles is to keep it clean.
Marvin Poole, a knife maker, who works with these types of
handle materials suggests the following care for the above
handle types:
The most important thing is to keep the handles clean and store
at room temperature. Apply a small amount of baby oil with a q
tip to a Ram horn handle every 3 months, for Ivory
handles every 6 months (small amount of baby oil will not
hurt scrimshaw on handle)and on Stag handles every
8-12months could help to prolong the stag. Always make sure you
wipe off any excess oil.
Wood
Most knife makers when making handles from exotic hardwoods
(woods from outside the U.S. such as Cocobolo, Ironwood, Bocote,
Ebony and Olivewood, etc) will stabilized the wood which
strengthens and protects the wood. These types of wood handles
need little care other than keeping them clean.
Knife handles that are made from domestic wood ( wood within the
U.S. such as Birdseye Maple, Oak, Basswood, Walnut and Maple,
etc), usually do not have their own oils and if not stabilized,
may need a little extra care to keep them from drying out. There
3 ways I know of to help wood handles of this type.
Apply a light coating of furniture wax and a good hand rubbing
which will help protect it from moisture.
Apply a small amount furniture polish with a moisturizer. I use
a furniture polish that has a moisturizer and lemon oil. The
polish cleans and gives the wood some protection from water and
stains.
Linseed Oil can also be use as a preservative on wood handles.
Whatever you choose to use always wipe off excess.
Leather stacked handles can be cleaned with a all color saddle
soap which gives it some protection against moisture. You may
also preserved them with a good quality leather treatment such
as mink oil, always wipe off excess oil or soap.
Synthetic handles (man made) such as Micarta, G10 and its
variants also require little care other than good cleaning.
These type of Knives can be placed in a dishwasher, although
extreme care should be taken to make sure the knife blade does
not bang against other object as this could damage the cutting
edge.
Sheaths
Leather sheaths over a period of time get dirty and the leather
can dry out get cracks and splits and need to be cleaned. This
is best done with a saddle soap (for all colors) or any good
leather soap or mink oil. I find that using Kiwi Outdoor Saddle
Soap periodically works real well. It cleans the leather, keeps
it supple and helps protect it from moisture. Periodical
cleaning of the sheath will ensure that it does not dry out and
split. However, do not overdue the leather oil products as this
will cause your sheath to lose its molded form. If that happens,
your sheath will not securely hold the knife.
Sharpening
Every knife blade with prolong use will need sharpening. More
people are hurt from using a dull knife;more pressure on the
knife is needed to cut and this extra pressure at times cause
the knife to slip. Keep you blade well honed. Probably the most
difficult part of honing your blade is maintaining the correct
angle. There are many good sharpening systems out there that
will help you and make it easy for you to get the correct angel.
Lansky sharpening system is easy to use and helps get the
correct honing angle. It also does a wonderful job of
sharpening. Marvin Poole uses this system to sharpen dull knives.
Storing
Always make sure your knife is clean then store it at room
temperature. Do not store your knife in a leather sheath,
remember the chemicals used in tanning the sheath can cause
stains and rust on your blade. It's easier if you store your
knife in the same location as the sheath, that way when you are
ready to use it everything is right there and ready to go.

Baby Shower Games For Your Special Baby Shower
Source: articleage.com
So you're holding a baby shower? Then you will need baby shower games to keep the guests entertained. While the baby shower is a good time to pamper the mom-to-be and make her feel very special there are also a number of guests that need to be kept happy for the duration of the event. Our focus here is on baby shower games, since these are always the most memorable part of any baby shower.
Baby shower games can be both silly and entertaining by overall they should be plain old fun. Some are intended to embarrass the mom-to-be, but others can really be fun and may even teach the guests something. The promise of a prize, even something token like, always adds to the enjoyment too.
Games can be a great way to get guests to mingle at a shower especially if they don't know each other and it is also a great ice breaker. Here are some ideas for choosing the right baby shower games:
In the planning stages of the baby shower, be sure to discuss potential game ideas with the mom-to-be. She may have some definite dislikes when it comes to baby shower games, and since it's her day, you want to be sure to plan something she'll enjoy and be very comfortable with.
Plan the first baby shower game for early in the party because it can make for a great icebreaker, so try to schedule it for just after everyone arrives but just before the main food courses and gift opening.
Pick a game that is connected to your theme. Whatever your decorating and food plans, you can tie it all together with a well-chosen game in the same theme.
Prepare in advance. If your game requires writing, be sure you've gathered up enough pens and pencils beforehand. And the same thing goes for other objects: have it all ready to go so guests don't have to wait.
Choose creative but inexpensive prizes as token items for guests. The fun of the game should be in the playing, but it's nice to have a prize and enters a little competitive spirit. Take pictures during the baby shower game. They make great additions to a mom's scrapbook and as a long term keepsake for the baby.
Choose easy Games.
Games should be easy to explain and easy to play. Anything confusing or difficult takes all the fun out of it and people get bored before the game even begins.
So now that you know how to plan for the shower games, here are some of the more popular shower games for you to incorporate into your event:
Guessing the Baby Food - Remove the labels from a few jars of baby food after marking the lids by numbers. Make a list of the contents of each jar. Each person has to taste the food and try to guess what it is - pear, potato, custard, beef etc. Let everyone write down the number from the jar and what they think is in it. The person with the most correct guesses wins the game!
The Tray Game - Place a number of baby items on a tray. (Usually about 15-20). Slowly circle the room allowing each guest a chance to examine the items. Remove the tray from the room and see who can remember the most items on a paper in 2 minutes. Usually the items on the tray go to the expectant mom and the winner gets a small prize.
Guess the Girth - Check with the guest of honor in advance on this one. All you need is a ball or two of string. Ask guests to cut a length of string that they think will stretch around the future mom's belly. After everyone has had a turn, the mother-to-be measures and cuts a string that fits her belly. Compare her string to all the guests' pieces of string. The person who was closest wins a small prize. This is a great icebreaker and always good for some laughs.
Baby Picture Match Game - In advance, ask all the guests for pictures of themselves as babies. Assemble the photos on a pin up board and assign a number to each photo. At some point during the shower, pass out sheets of paper to the guests so they can match each baby to the appropriate grown-up. If the guests don't know each other well, name tags can help the process. The person who gets the most correct answers wins.

Cheap, Easy And Fun! Design Your Kid's Room With A Bedroom Set
Source: articleage.com
When purchasing furniture for your children, you are probably looking for something fun, inexpensive, and durable. Well, bedroom sets are a good way to go. Since they are specially made for kids, the beds are smaller than the average adult bed, and the color schemes are often brighter and flashier, and much more fun.
Life will be easier if you buy the furniture in sets. This is because all the furniture will match in color and style, so you only need to go shopping once! Also, discounts automatically occur when you purchase pieces together rather than as separate components.
Childrens bedroom sets are made with kids in mind, so they are specially crafted to be durable. A set can include some of the following furniture: computer desk, chest of drawers with shelves to go above it, twin sized bed (some which turn into bunk beds or loft beds), a bedside table, vanity set, bookcase, mirror, and a wall shelf.
None of the sets come with mattresses, and depending on the age of your child, the size of the mattress will vary. If your child is a reader, order a bed and headboard that doubles as a bookshelf. Create a getaway underneath a loft bed with a desk, bean bag chair and some of their favorite treasures.
There are some sets designed specifically for babies, toddlers, older children, and teenagers.
If you're looking at cribs, you can have the option of different finials on the crib posts. Choices include balls, stars, airplanes, "bunnies", and flowers in black, navy, white, and cherry red.
For older children, your choice may depend entirely on the gender of your child. Pretty pink frills, flower gardens and fairy princess designs are a favorite with some little girls, while others prefer a rough and tumble fire engine, race car or castle theme.
If you prefer to decorate in colors of your own choice and want the furniture to be neutral, there are plenty of sets that come in basic white, and light or dark wood veneers. Pine is a common wood used for kids beds because it's attractive and serviceable.
Although the extra furniture with the bed is important, when purchasing the set, the bed is the most important thing to consider. Choose between loft beds, bunks, captain beds, twin or full-sized, toddler size beds, and cribs. Most of them are made of wood, but you can find ones that are made of wrought iron in original patterns.
The majority of the sets contain multiple drawers for all of the knick knacks (treasures, gifts) that children pick up over the years. Although children don't often want "classy" to rule the day, there are some sets that do that and look like a child's bedroom at the same time. The children's bedroom sets can come in different styles such as country, ranch, renaissance, and rattan.

Furniture Buying Guide.
Source: articledashboard.com
Buying furniture is the second most important investment after a house. The following are helpful tips before buying any furniture:
Determine your budget. Budgeting for furniture is a good guideline when you begin shopping to furnish your house or office. This is vital because you may be tempted to spend more than needed if you value quality and unique design(s). But a budget can keep you in line, to that extent that you may avoid spending all available funds on one piece.
Do some planning. Before you go shopping for furniture, decide on what colors you like most, what texture would work best with your family and what designs you prefer, for instance, whether you want striped, patterned or checkered.
Duration. Basically, most furniture pieces will be in your home for long time. Therefore, carefully choose those pieces having longevity in mind. Also consider that furniture for a baby's room will need to be changed as the child grows. Ensure that children's bedroom furniture comply with federal regulation and standards.
Consider your favorite furniture style. Have a clear idea of what style you prefer attractive. Some of the popular styles include: Contemporary, Casual, Traditional, Country, Eclectic, and Formal. Today's hottest furniture styles trends: Subdued Contemporary, Retro furniture, Updated French Country furniture and Leather furniture.
Furniture comparison. Before shopping for any furniture, do a comparative analysis of their prices, construction and quality. Get to know their prices. Determine whether they are veneer, solid or bonded.
Buy Furniture with confidence. Get to know more about the seller before buying. Ensure also that you are protected if you are buying online. Trust your judgment.

How to Get the Perfect Photo Birth Announcement
Source: articlesbase.com
More and more parents are choosing to send a photo birth announcement to announce the birth of their baby. This is a great opportunity to introduce your little one to family and friends who may not get to see the baby for a while. Of course, they want to see a picture. Does she have her mommy’s eyes? Does he have his daddy’s smile? That expression is just like Grandpa!Memory books and keepsake boxes will fill with your photo birth announcement. Reveal the baby’s name, date of birth, time of birth, birth weight, birth length along with a precious picture of you little bundle of joy. Taking a photo of an infant is not always an easy task. Use a digital camera set at the highest resolution. Take many, many photos. While she sleeps, yawns, stretches, anytime that you have a chance, snap a photo. Ask family and friends to email you the photos that they have taken. Keep them in their original form. If you choose to crop a photo that you may use on your announcement, be sure to keep the original. You, or a graphic artist, will be better able to work with an original photo and make it fit properly on the announcement. ÂWhite or Black backgrounds are always classy Choose soft colors to dress the infant inPhotograph the baby after naps, while content Have dad hold the baby on shoulder (like burping) and take a photo from behind dad while the baby is lifting his head. Make sure dad’s shirt is a solid color and does not clash.Sleeping babies are beautiful. Many parents become frustrated waiting for that perfect shot of the baby’s eyes. However, a sleeping baby is precious, serene and oh so sweet. Prepare ahead of time and dress the baby for his photo before he lies down for a nap. Prepare the napping place with accommodating backgrounds (a white blanket, black sheet, pastel colors). Make sure the background is clear of furniture, toys, and other items. Lay the baby down for his nap and wait. Peaceful, sleeping babies make adorable photo announcements. Researching photo ideas prior to the birth of your baby will be very helpful. This way, after the baby is born, you will have an idea of how you want to take the photo. Narrow your announcement choices down to about three. Pick one that has a horizontal photo, one with a vertical photo, and maybe one with a square or circular photo. When you finally get that perfect picture, you will have card choices that will accommodate. Along with your card choice, decide early on your opening line, and signature. The rest for the photo birth announcement will have to wait, until the arrival date!

A Little About Baby Sized Furniture
Source: ezinearticles.com
If you are going to have a baby, then you will know that babies need to have their own pieces of furniture. There are so many options today when it comes to baby sized furniture for you can choose from. This will include things such as sofas and chairs as well as tables and much, much more.
Knowing what you will need with regards to baby sized furniture will help you come to a better decision. You need to take the time to determine these needs as well as your budget before you go out and spend any money.
As a couple, if you have a baby already, you'll understand the fact that having a child is a very expensive undertaking. There's no need to incur any additional expenses by jumping in and purchasing the cutest baby sized furniture that you can find, even if you have no use for it.
With this in mind it is still nice to have certain pieces of baby furniture around because your child will like it and hopefully make use of it. Perhaps one of the first things that any baby will want, will be a chair. They see you sitting in them all day long but the ones that you sit in are much too large for them to easily get in and out of. Of course these are not the only things that you will be purchasing, but as time goes on you will know what you need to purchase and when it is needed simply by paying attention to what your baby wants.
No matter how you look at it though, when it comes to raising a child, it is important that you make sure that they understand how to make use of everything around them. This is why baby sized furniture is so very important to any family.
If you've just got a new son or daughter, you will need to make sure they have got the right baby furniture, cribs, and stroller to keep them safe and healthy. There are some safety items that you will need such as safety baby gates, but not until your baby becomes more mobile.

Pinatas: Many Different Options
Source: download
Most people think of pi๑atas as just a fun activity for parties, but the history of the pi๑ata reveals many interesting facts that go beyond the playing of a game, but pi๑atas certainly can be fun. Many people believe pi๑atas are Spanish, Mexican, or Latino in origin, but they probably actually originated in China. It is believed that Marco Polo discovered the Chinese making figures of cows, oxen or buffaloes, covered with colored paper, and adorned with harnesses, and trappings in special colors to greet the New Year. When the mandarins hit the figure with sticks of various colors, seeds spilled forth, and were burned. People then gathered the ashes for good luck throughout the year.
In modern times, pi๑atas are made in all shapes and sizes. They are common at all types of parties, from children's birthday parties, to Cinco de Mayo. They can be made to fit practically any theme, and filled with whatever you wish, from party favors like candies, pens, pencils, stickers, balloons, or whatever items you choose.
Pi๑atas are also easy to make and can be great as a party activity that guests cannot only make, but take home as their own party favor. It is important that this activity be one of the very first, so the pi๑atas can dry, before the party is over.
First make a finger paint recipe, which can be doubled or tripled, if necessary.
1/4 Cup cornstarch
2 Cups water
Food coloring
Mix the cornstarch and water in a sauce pan, and cook until thick. Allow it to cool, and add lots of food coloring, to make the paint bright and vivid.
Blow up a good sized balloon, and tie it off securely with a string or ribbon. Tape the ribbon to the table, but leave enough play, so it is easy to move the balloon and cover all sides.
Because finger paints can get messy, a wide, open space away from furniture, walls, or carpeting is best. Put an old, adult long-sleeved button-down shirt on each child, backwards to use as a paint smock. Be sure to cover the area they're painting on with plenty of newspapers or a drop cloth.
Let each child dip paper (butcher paper, or white paper works best, but you can use newspaper, paper bags, or gift wrap too) into the finger paint, and stick it to the balloons in layers, but be sure to leave an opening large enough to put in some goodies. Then take the strings, and tie the balloons to a clothesline, so they can dry. When they are dry, carefully push a pin into the balloon to pop it, add party favors, and stick a final piece of paper over the hole. These pi๑atas can be taken home as party favors!

Preparing Your Home For Toddler Safety
Source: isnare.com
Children from age one to age three are considered toddlers. It is a time of learning their environment. It is a time for them to explore every corner of every room and everything in between. Remember that the world is new to them and they want to get to know it.
Exploring is a good thing. It is a natural part of their growth. As your toddler explores they gain knowledge, independence, and confidence. It teaches them to use all five of their senses. It teaches them how to put things together, how things work, and enlarges their world moment by moment. They should be encouraged to explore your home, within limits of course.
It can be very difficult to keep up with your toddler and they can get from point A to point B in the time it takes you to turn around for just a second to do your normal daily chores. So you need to have confidence that your home is safe for your toddler to explore, even when you aren't watching them.
In this article, we will explore areas of your home and help you identify danger zones, then help you fix them so your explorer is safe in his new adventures. Remember, in every room of the house, get on your hands and knees and look at the world from your toddler's point of view. This will give you a better perspective on the dangers that lurk there.
Let's start where your toddler starts his or her day, their bedroom.
Is the glass in your toddler's bedroom made of tempered glass? Non-Tempered glass is dangerous, because it does not break into the tiny pieces that safety glass does. If your toddler's windows are non-tempered, you can either have new window glass installed or apply security film to them. The film is a much less expensive solution and binds the pieces of glass together if the window is ever broken.
Also, window locks are an essential item to have throughout the house, including your toddler's room. They allow a window to be open, but not too far. Never leave the window open more than four inches. Gates with vertical slats can also help prevent your toddler from falling out of the window. Screens will not hold them!
Placing your toddler's bed or crib in the proper place is also important. Experts recommend the space between the bars be no wider than two and three-eighths inches apart. Do not place your toddler's crib or other furniture under the window or near baseboard or other heaters.
Items left in the crib need to be at a minimum. Make sure your toddler cannot stack or use those items to get out of their crib. You might be surprised how inventive your toddler can be when he or she wants to get somewhere. You'll turn around and find them in some of the most impossible spots you can imagine.
Look around for any cords or other dangerous items. As your toddler gets more mobile these items present a great danger to them. Make sure you tie all cords and similar items well out of their reach. Any item that is longer than seven inches can be a danger to your toddler. Make sure they cannot get to them and remember your toddler will be more inventive and curious than you might think.
Of course, all medications, baby powder, lotion, and other items must be kept out of reach or stored in a childproof cabinet in your toddler's room.
Do not use extension cords in your toddler's room or anywhere else in the house where they can reach them. The danger of strangulation or electrocution is very real and should be taken seriously. Make sure you buy protective covers for all outlets. Having the outlets installed higher up the wall, out of reach of your toddler is an even better solution and much more convenient for you.
Hiding outlets behind furniture that your toddler cannot move or get behind is another solution until you can do more. The advice on electrical outlets also applies to the rest of the house so I won't be covering that again for every room.
Parents and toddlers both spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so we'll go there next.
Emergency phone numbers should be located everywhere there is a phone, including the kitchen. In a time of stress it is difficult to think straight or find phone books and the phone numbers you need, so keep them handy at all times.
Not just for toddler safety, but for all homes, there should be a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Take care of that right away, especially if you are a parent.
Toddlers love to climb into things like cabinets, your dishwasher, stove, and refrigerators. Make sure the dishwasher is always latched. Use childproof locks on your cabinet doors and on your refrigerator. They even make latches for your oven.
Speaking of the oven, maybe the most dangerous spot in the kitchen for your curious toddler use a stove guard to protect them. A stove guard keeps them from being able to reach the burners. Cook on your back burners whenever possible. If the controls for the stove are placed on the front of the stove, you will need to remove them.
Train yourself to not use any lower cabinets like under the sink to store hazardous products. Even soap is dangerous. Many soaps contain lye and can poison your child. This applies to all rooms where you store products, including the laundry room. Remember, if it can be reached, it will be reached.
Now do the same for all sharp objects like knives, forks, scissors, pizza cutters, and ice picks. Train yourself to put these items away every time you use them.
If you keep liquor in the kitchen or have a bar in your house where they are kept, make sure your toddler cannot reach it. The tiniest bit of alcohol can make a small child very sick and too much could prove fatal.
Ok, you get an idea of what to do in the kitchen, now let's head for your bathroom.
A huge number of accidents occur in the bathroom each year affecting both adults and toddlers. It's a good thing to keep that in mind when preparing your bathroom for safety.
Overhead door locks are available to be purchased and used to keep toddlers out of rooms that are not in use. You should buy these and install them on all bathroom doors.
If you have any low cabinets, get childproof locks for those the same as it was advised for you to do in your kitchen. All medications, ointments, shampoos, soap, and other products should be kept out of your toddler's reach.
Do not leave hairdryers, electric shavers, radios, and other appliances plugged in. It's a good idea to keep those out of reach as well because the cords are hazardous to your toddler.
Fire Departments recommend that your water temperature should be set at 120 degrees. Setting your hot water heater higher than that produces the danger of scalding.
Water safety applies in the bathroom, the same as it does for any pool area. A child can easily drown in your bathroom. It only takes two inches of water to create a drowning hazard. Do not leave the tub full of water and buy locks for your toilet seat. Not only can those save your toddler from drowning, it can also help you avoid the headaches of learning the types of things your toddler can find to plug the toilet with.
Your toddler should never be alone in the bathroom. If you are bathing them and have to leave, dry them off and take them with you. Better safe than sorry, as the saying goes.
Your toddler will also spend a lot of time in your family room, den, or living room, so let's explore that area before we allow them to.
Do you have plants? These seemingly harmless and decorative plants may pose a very dangerous problem for your child. Are you sure that none of your plants are poisonous? Look up information about your plants in an encyclopedia, online, or consult a poison control center to be sure.
Do you have a fireplace? You can purchase guards for fireplaces at many stores. Glass fire screens are not acceptable. They get very hot and can burn your toddler if they touch it. Make sure you create a safe area around the fireplace and that your toddler cannot get into it. Where they can go, they will and the fireplace is an obvious hazard, whether it is lit or not.
Make sure all the doors in your house are safe. If they have metal doorstops, replace them with doorstops that are made entirely of rubber. Doorstops are inviting to young children who play on the floor.
As difficult as it sounds, all furniture should be placed away from the windows. Windows pose a danger to your toddler and they will climb the furniture before you know it.
Is any of your furniture easy to tip over? Floor lamps and other items, which can be turned over easily, are dangerous. Either get rid of them or secure them to a wall somehow.
Also, if your furniture in any room of the house has sharp corners, something needs to be done about it. Either purchase furniture without sharp corners or buy cushions that can be placed over the corners. You can also make your own. Just be sure it's well padded so the corner cannot cause serious injury.
If you have a home office, I could write a whole article about the dangers for your toddler there. Use the overhead door locks to keep your toddler out of your office if possible. That's the best advice and might save you having to do a lot of work over again after your toddler gets through with it.
Do you take your toddler into your bedroom?
Make sure all lower drawers and cabinets have childproof locks on them, closet doors have overhead locks, and any chests or other items are also locked.
Jewelry is especially dangerous for your toddler to get their hands on. Cosmetics can be poisonous. Sharp objects like manicure sets or sewing kits can also be dangerous. Again, make sure all cords are tied up where they are out of your toddler's reach.
Do you have older children? Let's see what hazards wait in their bedrooms.
You are probably careful about the types of toys you buy for your toddler, but are you careful to make sure they don't get their little hands on the toys you buy for your older children? You will need your older children to assist you in keeping their toys out of your toddler's reach. This is a very difficult task, but you have to remember toys made for older children can harm younger ones.
Are there stairs in your home?
You will need to purchase gates for the top and bottom of the staircase if you have a toddler in your home. This is a must. They should have vertical slats no more than two and three-eighths inches apart and should be sturdy and secure. Finding a way to bolt them to the walls is best.
If your banisters have more than four inches of space between supports, then you will have to solve that issue as well. You can use particle board, plywood, plastic or other sheeted product to cover those areas and keep your toddler from slipping between supports and onto the stairs alone.
This article in no way covers all the things you will need to do to make your home a safe place for your toddler to explore, but it is our hope we have gotten you in the right frame of mind to find the rest on your own.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RECENT CPSC STATEMENT ABOUT INFANT SLEEP MISLEADING
Last week's CPSC admonishing adjoin sleeping with your babyish leaves out key facts.
NASHVILLE, May 7, 2002. Last anniversary at the All-embracing Juvenile Articles appearance in Dallas, the Customer Artefact Assurance Commission (CPSC) issued a account admonishing parents that "the alone safe abode for an baby to beddy-bye is in a crib." The abstracts basal this advocacy is both estimated and inconclusive. In addition, the advocacy is biased against the banking interests of those underwriting the consistent campaign
The advocacy relies on advice that a CPSC staffer accepted was "anecdotal, not scientific." This abstracts indicates that amid 1999 and 2001, at atomic 180 accouchement beneath the age of two died in developed beds. The CPSC aggregate advice from afterlife certificates, coroner's reports, bi-weekly clippings and added sources. Abstracts aggregate from these kinds of sources can be inconsistent, subjective, and, in abounding cases, artlessly incomplete.
Additionally, several key pieces of advice are absent. The address does not appraise the absolute amount of accouchement who slept in developed beds during that time. While the accident of 60 children's lives per year is tragic, this amount by itself does not advice us absolutely accept what happened. What we accept is a raw amount after any angle โ" to accept we charge to apperceive the amount of accouchement who slept in developed beds after incident, as able-bodied as the amount of breed who died in cribs during the aforementioned time period.
The account is casting into added agnosticism by its timing and abutting affiliation with bassinet manufacturers. The CPSC appear this account accordingly with the Juvenile Artefact Manufacturer's Affiliation (JPMA) at their all-embracing barter appearance in Dallas. This collective account is alone the aboriginal footfall in a planned massive attack aimed at admonishing parents of the "hidden dangers of agreement breed in developed beds." Because this bright endorsement of cribs will assuredly aftereffect in sales, one can calmly catechism the motives of the JPMA. If the absorbed is absolutely to assure children, it would accomplish far added faculty to accession acquaintance of safe sleeping practices in both cribs and bed administration situations.
The CPSC is an absolute government bureau answerable with abbreviation the accident of injuries and deaths associated with customer products. Considerable accurate abstracts about safe adult-child bed administration exists; yet, in this instance, the CPSC is advisedly allotment to endorse the use of a artefact rather than to attach to its mission of ensuring the assurance of those products. Their job should be to accomplish all sleeping environments as safe as possible.
When parents who do not corruption booze or drugs co-sleep with their baby on a close mattress after creamy bedding, the ambiance can be benign for both the baby and the parent. Research has apparent that breed who co-sleep breastfeed more, get added careful affliction during the night from their parent, and accept added touching, all of which accept been apparent to be benign to adolescent children. Additionally, mothers who co-sleep address bigger beddy-bye themselves.

Worries and bliss run duke and duke and as the weeks and months fly by, you activate to admiration if you will anytime be accessible for this baby.
As accessible as you anticipate you are, parents are never absolutely able for the aboriginal moment that squirming, shrieking array is placed in your arms. Setting up the nursery, axis on the adaptable just to accept to the lullaby, abrasion sheets, and accumulating the beat are givens. Parents are told endless times what to annals for or buy in the way of bassinet bedding, furniture, and babyish gear. There are checklists with these items, and if you ability the basal of the list, you feel a faculty of satisfaction. But, are you absolutely ready?
The Small Stuff
When you get the new babyish home from the hospital, it's the little things that count. A lot of registries and babyish food don't acquaint you how important it is to accept a abundant childhood bag or the (literally) hidden allowances of WeeBlocks. Burp clothes accept about burning use and even admitting your little one will not be bistro solid foods for a little while, you ability be afraid at how abundant a bib can still catch.
New adventures are so meaningful, but still about cutting if you get home. Your babyish is accessible for a bath, but how did the nurses do it at the hospital? Slippery babies and wet washcloths aside, is your babyish soap affable enough? You ability accede trading in your accepted ablution items for vitamin affluent babyish derma affliction articles that will allay and assure baby's skin. Research your alternative afore babyish arrives to ensure you accept time to acquisition the absolute items.
Taking Affliction of what's A lot of Important
Planning and purchasing aside, it is about assertive that both alert mother and ancestor will be stressed. While this is altogether accustomed for both parents anticipating such a activity alteration event, the accent should be dealt with - abnormally for mom as it can in fact be alarming in pregnancy.
As so abounding things are off banned to abundant woman, you should yield advantage of what is available. Yield time for a spa day, or babyish yourself at home. Dad can advice mom relax with a abatement massage. Special amplitude mark minimizers are accessible that can not alone accomplish for a abatement rub, but aswell advice action those annoying amplitude marks.
Regardless of how able you are, or how able you anticipate you are, there will consistently be one endure affair to grab or acquisition already you're on your own with your new baby. Mischievous Imp: Baby's Eleventh Month Guide
Source: isnare.com
Believe it or not, your baby is just one month short of being a year old!
Bubbling with energy
In baby's eleventh month, he is discovering a whole new exciting universe at a frantic pace. He can roll, sit, stand and even walk a few steps. He has a mind of his own now and you might be shocked to see him assert himself! If he seems to be quiet for a while it could signals some mischief he is up to. He could creating havoc in the restroom or might be busy chewing your new lipstick!
Milestones
Your eleven month-old baby can now stand alone and can expertly cruise around furniture. He can wave and turn around without falling. Encourage him to walk on different surfaces bare feet like the floor, carpet, grass or the sand at the beach.
Baby has learnt to say a few words and understands several more. He has a firmer grasp too. He also loves to deliberately drop objects and have you pick them up (only to drop them again and again!). He is now beginning to distinguish 'good' from 'naughty' behavior and may seek approval and admiration from you.
Red Alert!
Your adventurous darling may try to scale 'new heights' and climb onto furniture to explore more avenues. Frequent stumbles and tumbles are in store as your baby's eleventh month makes her more active than ever. Keep detergents, drain cleaners, cosmetics, medicines, alcoholic beverages, and any other poisonous substances in locked cabinets. Constantly supervise your baby to avoid letting her get into trouble.
Growth spurt
You might notice that your eleven month-old baby is not gaining much weight. Do not panic. Your energetic baby is using more calories for all his activities. It is crucial for him to develop his co-ordination and strengthen his muscles for his strenuous actions like crawling, standing and walking.
Try to make mealtime more fun to sustain his interest in eating. Introduce a variety of foods and give him colorful bowls and spoons. He will love to feed himself (though most of the food may not get to his mouth!). Do not force him to eat. Leave it to him to decide how much he wants.
Temper tantrums!
Your eleven month-old baby can now exhibit her moods and emotions openly. She is more sensitive and may trust certain people and fear others. She may shake his head back and forth to say "no" more often. Hurling herself on the ground as she wails her lungs out is not uncommon either.
Help expand your baby's vocabulary
Talk a lot to your baby and read to him too. Introduce him to the vast and wonderful world of words! Tell him the names of all objects around him. Take him for a stroll and point out the trees, the sky, birds and flowers. Identify their colors for him.
Ask your eleven month-old baby several questions and listen patiently even as he babbles an unfathomable tale!

Automotive Upholstery Care
Source: isnare.com
There's nothing quite like that "new car smell", but chances are, time has caused your vehicle to smell like a combination of tennis shoes, tobacco and wet dog. There's no magic potion to regain the original luster of your car's interior, but with a little elbow grease and detailing, you can breath new life, and a fresher scent, into tired upholstery.
Automotive upholstery comes in a variety of materials and fabrics including vinyl, leather, cloth and velour. Maintaining the durability and cleanliness of automotive upholstery can be quite expensive, as many upholstery professionals charge expensive rates to remove the smallest stain. Fortunately, there are a number of inexpensive tricks that you can do to clean up the kind of minor accidents you'll encounter during your daily drive.
These automotive upholstery care tips can involve the use of common household products that are easy to use and readily available. However, you must keep in mind that major stains or marks might require the assistance of a professional automotive upholstery service to avoid further damage caused by improper treatment.
* Cleaning Automotive Upholstery
Common automotive upholstery, like many fabrics, can be easily cleaned. Eliminate all surface dust using a small vacuum, and then use a crevice tool for detailing between small cracks and spaces in the upholstery. Leather and vinyl upholstery must be cleaned using a suitable cleaning solution with protector. This added protection helps to maintain a pliable leather surface, and prolongs its beautiful appearance.
* Spills
It's bound to happen to any commuter: you hit the tiniest bump or hit the brakes, and you've got a spill on your upholstery. When it happens, try to soak up as much of the liquid from the surface of the upholstery as you can, as quickly as possible. On cloth or velour seats, use a cotton rag or wads of paper towels to soak up the liquid. You'll need to apply heavy pressure to get as much of the liquid as possible from the upholstery.
* Heavy Stains
Heavy stains can give you a heavy heart, but don't be too quick to bring out stain removing chemicals that can damage upholstery. For most colored stains on automotive upholstery, especially noticeable ones, try dabbing the affected area with a baby wipe. If that does not lift the stain, try pre-treating the spot with a little soda water.
* Odor Removal
Aside from obvious sources like spilled beverages, automotive upholstery can easily pick up odors that circulate throughout the rest of the vehicle. After a while, the scent of the upholstery itself can be quite overwhelming, even after the odorous perpetrator has long since vanished. Cigarettes, drive-thru fast food bags and even innocent cups of coffee will all leave a lasting impression. In most cases, deodorizing sprays can clear the air. Make sure that the windows are open when you spray, to let harmful fumes escape. If your stinky culprit is cigarette smoke, more drastic measures can be in order to drive the odor away. Try to snuff out the smoke smell by shampooing the carpet with a quality commercial product. If the smell persists, you'll need to seek professional help.
* Leather Upholstery Care
There is nothing more luxurious than a car with leather seats. Automotive leather is the pinnacle of upholstery options, but can also be the hardest to maintain. If your automobile is clad in leather, you've already made quite an investment, and you know that it requires meticulous care. Most leather interiors undergo more wear and tear than fine leather furniture, and require the same degree of care. As with any type of leather, automotive leather upholstery reacts unfavorably to extreme temperatures. Premature deterioration, cracked surfaces and a dull appearance can be caused by severe hot and cold, water and excess dryness.
* Spills on Leather
Unlike fabric seats, sudden spills on leather upholstery can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Leather upholstery must be maintained with protectant. Purchase protectant specially developed for leather automotive upholstery, and apply it regularly to preserve the supple feel and natural moisture of the leather. Your beautiful leather seats can easily become a sticky, grubby mess. Avoid build-up by wiping away surface residue and dust on a regular basis.
Automobiles are big investments, and maintaining your car will help retain its value. With proper automotive upholstery care, you'll be able to keep your automobile looking--and smelling--just like a new car.

How An Amish Wood Craft Can Become A Family Heirloom
Source: isnare.com
An Amish wood craft can be the central theme of a bridal shower that will long be remembered as a unique affair. It is often difficult to come up with a motif that will make a bride's shower one that is different from all the others, so here's a grand suggestion! Use a beautifully made wooden recipe box as the main component of the event. The bride-to-be will be "showered" with a gift that may become a family heirloom for generations to come. In addition, she will receive many useful and lovely recipes, given to her by dear friends and relatives.
Each guest should be invited to the shower with an invitation that includes a blank recipe card that will later fit perfectly into the box. The invitees will be asked to bring a dish they have made to the event with its corresponding recipe, handwritten on the card. At the bridal shower, the card is inserted into the recipe box. Everyone will get a chance to sample and savor that particular homemade food, as part of the shower's activities. This theme carries through the entire event, and it also saves the hostess from hours of cooking and baking!
Since the box is one made by an Amish craftsman, the invitation can gently stress that an Amish recipe would a perfect choice to make and record on the card. If an attendee doesn't have one in her repertoire, she can go online to find innumerable opportunities to make an Amish recipe a family favorite of her own. Then it will become the perfect choice for the shower recipe card. Everything from Amish Friendship Salad, which uses ham, macaroni, carrots, onions, barbeque sauce, and condiments, to Amish Chicken and Corn Soup, which has the delicious ingredients of chicken, onions, carrots, celery, parsley and noodles, can be found. There's even an old favorite, Amish Chocolate Chip Cookies! Other tempting dishes such as Amish Friendship Bread, Amish Apple Strudel, and Amish Baked Apples, are ideal choices for the recipe box.
Not only is this Amish wood craft giving the bride a cherished gift that she will use her entire adult life, but it can also be a family heirloom that is lovingly given to each generation that follows. As the woman becomes a mother, and shows her daughter, or daughter-in-law, how to prepare certain family favorite foods, that beautiful wooden recipe box, which has taken on the patina of loving handling over the decades, will be the center of a kitchen work table. Children will know it as a magical fountain of yummy foods. Imagine the joy that will be shining on the face of the next bride-to-be, as she is the recipient of this wonderful, everlasting, intergenerational gift!
If a wedding shower is not planned for the near future, the recipe box would make an excellent birthday gift, for bakers and cooks of any household. Instead of using it as the central theme of a wedding shower, it can be the focus of another event, this time a baby shower! It could be given to a mother-to-be, filled with wholesome recipes for baby foods. The possibilities for the gift of an Amish traditional recipe box never end. How about for a young teenager who is turning sweet sixteen? The box could also be a special birthday gift for a young adult who is coming of age at eighteen or even twenty-one. Why not gift a young woman who is starting her own apartment, or graduating from high school or college? This item would also make an ideal farewell party gift to a special friend who is moving away.
The recipe box theme can be expanded at any one of these events to include other Amish wooden crafts. Items such as wooden bowls, rolling pins, and spoons are often handed down from mother to daughter to granddaughter. Not only do they compliment the recipe box in quality, and durability, but also in sentiment. These kitchen tools can invoke beautiful, nostalgic memories of a mother or grandmother, who used the same items to provide sustenance for their families. There is a true nurturing quality that is inherent in the soul of these products. They are family treasures, which are cherished. They have a similarity to prized possessions such as family Bibles.
One might wonder, "Why Amish?" Each wooden piece represents the craftsmanship of an experienced American Amish worker. When one desires finely crafted items made by skilled artisans, who have spent their entire lives working with wood, then the choice needs to be Amish. These American workers know the intrinsic qualities of American woods, including which kinds of wood should be used for kitchen utensils, for recipe boxes, for furniture, etc. In our fast paced society, time usually means money. In contrast, one finds the Amish craftsman, creating at a pace suited to making a perfect product, rather than to a time clock. Quality of workmanship is an ideal as well as a reality to the Amish worker. These items are not made in a foreign factory, but instead, are fashioned by skilled woodworkers here in the United States. High quality American native woods are used to make these products. They are not of the plastic or pressed wood varieties found in discount stores.
So how can an heirloom-quality Amish wood craft be purchased, if one does not live anywhere near Amish country? In years past, someone might have had to travel across a number of U.S. states in order to arrive at an Amish community. Happily, we now have the Internet, and technology has solved that logistical problem. Traditional, well-made Amish crafts can be obtained online. So that wonderful set of wooden bowls with mixing spoons, or that beautifully crafted recipe box, with the lid that closes so perfectly, can all be acquired while sitting in the comfort of one's own home. The wedding shower, or birthday party, with the recipe box as the central theme can be a definite reality. In order to find a product made by people who do things "the old-fashioned" way, a person actually needs to go to cyber space! One can find there, the world of the Amish people, who craft with true American values, and beliefs, as they make products of lasting, wholesome beauty, suitable to be called family heirlooms.
